This harvest scene preceded a move to the USA in 1950,
where I grew up from age 4 (1950) to age 27/28 (1974), when I returned to Germany.

The transition to cowboy life was just a Colt away.
We lived on a farm with cows and 3000 turkeys.
I started to learn English, reading dictionaries and encyclopedias when I could get them.

Dad and Mom put up many people during strong blizzards. We had our own Coke machine
and I went to a one-room one-teacher school for children in kindergarden to grade 12.

because I had read all the books through the sixth grade by that time. The family had an addition, sister Inta Kaulins.

I graduated cum laude. I was 17 and grew half a foot my senior year,
which changed my appearance, especially with longer hair and contact lenses.

After graduation, I went to Law School at Stanford University.

In spite of induction into military service after the first semester of law school
I graduated with my entering class by taking a heavier course load and summer classes.

I was drafted out of law school into the Marines, where I was Platoon Honorman (Platoon 1039),
Company Honor Man and received the Dress Blues Award.

1968-1971, Stanford, California – Professor John Kaplan (deceased 1989, obituary November 27 in the New York Times).
John Kaplan was my mentor at Stanford Law School. John was a top graduate of Harvard University in physics and law
and renown by his peers for his brilliance. We were good friends, I edited several of his books,
and I learned a lot from John, most importantly his primary rule of evidence,
“Go to the original sources.”
